Because… together we are stronger! \n  \n\nSpeakers: \nSean Hastings – NOAA Federal \n \nSean Hastings has 20+ years of experience with NOAA’s Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary as the Policy\, Information and Management Officer.\nHe is responsible for the development of policies and programs to address industrial\, military\, commercial and recreational uses and impacts in and around the sanctuary. He also handles emergency response\, enforcement\, permits\, community relations\, and is a liaison to the media.\nSean helped to create the marine protected area network to restore local fish and invertebrate populations and habitats in the sanctuary\, and helped the state of California to do the same in state waters on the mainland. In addition\, with a multi-agency coalition and community support he moved international shipping lanes to protect endangered whales. \n  \nDoug Marcy: Caribbean Coral Restoration Center\, Inc.\n \n \nDoug traveled from the Sandhills of Nebraska through the mountains of Colorado to explore the Caribbean in the early 2000’s. For the last 16 years\, he has called the islands of Bocas del Toro\, Panama his home. As a naturalist and environmentalist\, when he saw what was happening to the coral reefs around him\, he combined his passion with his civil and mechanical engineering experience\, founded Caribbean Coral Restoration Center and became an Active marine ecosystem reconstructionist. \n  \nRegister now below for our webinar with our two amazing speakers! However\, very few campuses are meeting the mark\, and research plays an important role in comparing progress between institutions across the world. Learn from two leading experts about what these two concepts look like in practice\, and what their research has found in these areas. \n\n  \nAshpreet Kaur presented on: “Toward a better understanding of Zero-Waste program success on campus” \nAshpreet Kaur is a final year Ph.D. student at University of Florida. She did her Master’s in Environmental Science from India in 2018 and came to the US to learn about better waste management. She has been researching in the field of ZW for the past 5 years and has worked on various projects in the same realm. She is a certified Zero Waste Expert and waste management expert. She will be talking about her research on ZW programs in higher education institutions. \n  \n \n  \nKelsie Imus presentedwaste on: “Circular Business Models: Research\, Stakeholders\, and Action” \nIn this presentation\, students will learn about the basics of university research\, circular business models\, and how circularity can be driven at a university level through identifying stakeholders. More in depth we will explore:\n1) The value and practical steps to begin University-driven research\n2) An overview of the sliding scale of circularity\, six different circular business models\, and an example of a successful circular organization\n3) An overview of my research findings thus far and different levers of change based on organizational types\n4) How to drive circularity at a University level through identifying stakeholders and resources to get started \n  \nKelsie Imus is a young professional born in Michigan\, currently working remotely full-time as a Circular Business Model Research Assistant at the University of Michigan (U-M). She graduated in August 2022 from U-M with a Bachelors in Organizational Theory and Environmental Studies with minors in Business and Spanish. During college\, she was involved with creating a professional sustainability fraternity\, business & DEI research\, supporting social impact entrepreneurial projects\, playing ultimate frisbee\, and learning how to navigate on a scooter when she broke her ankle (which has since healed). She has many interests in agriculture\, circularity\, sustainable supply chains\, and exploring how to create more local economies. \n

This couldn’t be further from the truth and we have proof from more than 100 college students in one elective course who started green teams in their workplaces and implemented a wide range of sustainability initiatives\, including convincing decision makers to invest in new equipment. These young leaders were able to spread awareness and drive positive culture change among their work peers. In this webinar\, you’ll hear about the course approach and examples of the students’ career-changing experiences. \n  \nDr. Aurora Dawn Benton is Founder and Chief Change Maker of Astrapto LLC\, which she founded in 2016 to offer strategic insights and practical pathways to sustainability. Her passion is making sustainability approachable and she is driven by a belief that all desire dignity in their work. Dr. Benton adamantly insists her clients include all levels and all departments of an organization in sustainability programs so that the most robust outcomes and lasting change are possible. She has developed expertise in and spoken on topics ranging from supplier diversity and sustainable procurement to food and materials waste reduction. Dr. Benton has led three World Wildlife Fund food waste initiatives\, most recently as the hospitality subject matter expert for the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment sector pilots. She has also been a thought leader in industry initiatives such as the Event Industry Council’s (EIC) Sustainable Events Standards and she was the curriculum designer for the EIC Sustainable Event Professional Certificate course. She is a sought after speaker on sustainability at industry events including annual conferences and regional chapters for IMEX\, PCMA\, NACE\, MPI\, SITE\, and GBTA.  \n  \nAstrapto means to illuminate and our mission is to shed light on social and environmental issues in hospitality\, travel\, and events. Astrapto also works with other industries such as healthcare and technology to drive positive impact. DESCRIPTION:2022 has been the sixth-warmest year on record from January through August\, with a global average temperature 1.55° higher than the 20th-century average. And we have all seen weather events that were once-in-a-century become almost yearly! \n“The world needs Rotary now more than ever\,” stated Jennifer Jones\, RI President\, in June 2021\n \nRotary is uniquely positioned in our communities to take action and advocate for “Protecting our Environment.” We have the club leadership and the dedication to service that makes all our efforts bear fruit. Now is the time for us to increase our collaboration and join with over 900 Rotary clubs worldwide that have already committed to action that addresses this existential issue. \n  \nA Global Climate Action Forum will be held in person on November 26 and 27 to present three climate challenges for 2023. Join us in-person on both days or remotely on Saturday as we live up to the Four Way Test (Beneficial to All Concerned) and our purpose as Rotarians (Service Above Self). SUMMARY:10/13/22 Forum on Rotary Reefs
DESCRIPTION:Please join the RCAT Network on October 13th at 4 pm PT to discuss the critical connection between our oceans\, coral reefs\, and planetary health\, and how Rotary clubs around the world can join forces to build 118 artificial coral reefs for 118 years of Rotary. \n  \nToday\, over half a billion people directly depend on reefs for food\, income\, and protection. However\, every single person and every single species on this planet depend on coral reefs to keep the ocean’s delicate ecosystems in balance\, which help mitigate some of the worst effects of the climate crisis from being felt on land. \nThe reef itself is a hub for thousands of species of fish\, corals\, and more. With the ever-changing conditions of the ocean rapidly accelerating due to climate change\, the reef-building corals are not able to withstand the extreme conditions and are disappearing right before our very eyes. Just one species of coral disappearing from a given reef is enough to throw the ecosystem out of balance\, and start a detrimental cascade of events that will threaten the ocean’s ability to host life\, sequester greenhouse gases\, and more. \n  \nWe can be the solution. \n  \nWith your support\, 118 Rotary Reefs will be constructed in the Rotary Year 2022-2023 for the 118th year of Rotary. Funds will be used to create reefs and support a Coral Reef Bank\, which supports the preservation of coral genetic diversity\, to save these species from becoming extinct. \n  \nEach artificial reef provides a new\, safe\, non-degradable structure for all the species that rely on coral to grow and feed upon for decades to come. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe People of Action Summits (Rotary Zones 26 and 27)\n“Water: From Source to Sea”\nHosted by the Rotary Club of Newport Beach from Sept. 10-11\nBoth virtual and in-person programming options\n\nDear RCAT Network Members and Supporters\, \nYou may have heard about the “People of Action Summits”\, hosted by Rotary Zones 26 and 27\, where Rotarians have an in-person or virtual opportunity to join forces with communities and industry experts to tackle some of the biggest challenges we face (https://rotarysummits.com/). \nOn September 10 and 11\, the Rotary Club of Newport Beach will be hosting the “Water: From Source to Sea” Summit\, a two-day event focusing on the crucial link between water and planetary health. We hope you will register for this important event and support the Rotarians who have given large amounts of personal time and effort to make it happen. \n  \nThe Source to Sea Summit takes place from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Saturday\, September 10th and 12:30 to 4:30 PM on Sunday\, September 11th and can be attended virtually or in person. The event with be jam-packed with information\, inspiration\, and actionable ideas. Rotarians will learn how they can become an ambassador for clean and healthy water. A major feature of the Summit will be hands-on water projects being undertaken concurrently across our “Big West” Rotary districts that weekend. \n  \nKeynote Speaker: Captain Paul Watson \nCaptain Paul Watson is an environmental activist and author who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society\, an organization that protects marine wildlife. Watson was also a founder of Greenpeace. He shares his passion for animals and the environment through his involvement with many other organizations. DESCRIPTION:Please join the RCAT Network and the Global Climate Pledge for the second Zoom program in our newly-created Climate Conversations series. This month will feature a conversation with our moderator and RCAT Leader\, Gary H. White\, and his special guest\, Dr. Karl Hausker\, Senior Fellow with the World Resources Institute (WRI) Climate Program. Their conversation will focus on 6 key takeaways from the recently released IPCC Sixth Assessment Working Group ll report\, which dealt with the urgent challenge of climate change mitigation. \n  \nIn his work at WRI\, Dr. Karl Hausker leads the analysis and modeling of climate mitigation\, net-zero emissions\, electricity market design\, and the social cost of carbon. He lectures widely around the world on these and other climate change topics. Karl has worked for more than three decades in the fields of climate change\, energy\, and the environment. He has consulted with legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government\, numerous research institutions\, and a variety of environmental NGOs. He has also led projects for the governmental agencies USAID\, USEPA\, Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative\, Western Climate Initiative\, and California Air Resources Board. \n  \nPrior to working at WRI\, Karl was a Vice President at the consulting firm\, ICF International. He served as Deputy Director at the Center for Climate Strategies as a Principal with Hagler Bailly. Karl served the Clinton administration as Deputy Assistant Administrator in the EPA Policy Office and represented the EPA at the very first United Nations Congress of the Parties (COP-1) in 1995 in Berlin. Lastly\, he served as the Chief Economist for the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. Karl holds an M.P.P and Ph.D. in Public Policy from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Cornell University. \n  \nhttps://youtu.be/895elL05WeM
