Conservation International Timor-Leste

Conservation International’s work in Timor-Leste is the only international NGO to focus completely on conservation and environmental issues in Timor-Leste. Their primary goals with their work is to improve local food security, fight climate change and enhance livelihoods primarily through the establishment of a functioning national protected area network. CI reaches these goals by working directly with government and local communities to research, implement, and improve the management of protected areas on land and at sea. They provide innovative solutions to key environmental issues such as unsustainable fishing practices, deforestation, and climate change by fusing science, policy, and fieldwork in their work.

The Haburas Foundation

The Haburas Foundation was formed by a group of Timorese students and is the oldest and most active national environmental group in the country. In order to promote better environmental management practices that also respond to the developmental needs of local communities, they use a wide network of local community groups and rely on traditional Timorese culture. Haburas prioritizes and is at the forefront of promoting principles of equality of opportunity, equal access to resources, equal responsibility for the protection of peoples and the environment, and ensuring equality for everyone’s benefit.
