African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT)

Founded in 2007, the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) is a nonprofit dedicated to conservation of lions, as well as the species necessary to support their role as keystone species within African ecosystems. Their work takes place in several African countries but much of their research is based in Zimbabwe. Their research supports the implementation of locally-based solutions, which are lacking in these countries in the wake of broader bush research. Through their work, they try to promote the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict through education and proper resource management.

Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe

Environmental Buddies, Zimbabwe, started in 2013 by three young Zimbabweans, is an environmental NGO which aims to promote sustainable forests, resource management and waste management in Zimbabwe. They aim to do so through educational programs and community projects that raise awareness on the importance of sustainable development. Additionally, they advocate for the planting of indigenous trees throughout the country and continue to promote this practice.

Painted Dog Conservation

Painted Dogs are one of the most endangered species in Africa, with a population count of just under seven-thousand. Painted Dog Conservation dedicates their organization to protecting this species in Zimbabwe through a three-pronged approach of conservation, education, and community outreach focused around the outskirts of Hwange National Park. On the conservation level, the PDC facilitates anti-poaching units, manages a Painted Dog rehabilitation facility, and monitors packs. This organization also prioritizes education about the species through offering the free Iganyana Children’s Bush camp for local children to visit and learn at their rehabilitation facility for multiple days. Beyond this, the PDC has worked with youth communities to grow local gardens with irrigation systems connected to nearby boreholes to ensure these groups have access to reliable meals. Painted Dog Conservation aims not only to protect the Painted Dog population but also to support communities that share the land with this unique animal.

ZERO

The organization was founded in 1987 and works on tackling sustainable development at both the macro and micro levels. They work with government, civil society organizations, private sector companies, and the community who share their mission in order to influence others to do the same. ZERO has a variety of programs in areas such as land, energy, and environment. By working on these issues, the organization is helping create economic opportunities for women and men while mitigating climate change.
