Aghirin’man

Aghirin’man is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to protect the environment and the people of Niger from the detrimental effects of uranium mining. Because 75% of France’s electricity uses nuclear energy, countries like Niger that are abundant in uranium have been exploited for decades to operate French power plants, meaning thousands of tons of uranium are extracted annually. Aghirin’man’s mission is to protect workers and people in surrounding areas who are often exposed to the deadly radiation that comes from these uranium mines. The organization also encourages the creation of policies that will mitigate the harmful effects of mining. Even after the closure of some underground mines like the COMINAK, Aghirin’man calls for the restoration of the former mining site and effective management of radioactive waste.

Jeunes Volontaires pour l'Environnement

Jeunes Volontaires pour l’Environnement (JVE-Niger) is a youth-led non-governmental organization based in Niger. Their objective is protecting the environment, implementing sustainable development, and promoting peace in Niger, all while having youth as the forefront of these movements. Many of their sustainable development projects empower women and strengthen their entrepreneurial capacity, such as the Women Fish Smokers project which improved working conditions, and the Rice Bale Kilns Project that taught women to adapt to alternative fuels, like using rice husks instead of wood. Other ways the organization encourages community involvement is through training workshops, reforestation camps, and sustainable energy school programs. JVE-Niger also works closely with other environmental organizations throughout Africa to spread awareness on climate change and other environmental issues.

Les Puits du Désert

Les Puits du Désert is a non-governmental organization based in the Tidène Valley in northern Niger, a region where only about 5% of the population has access to clean water sources. The organization works closely with its Nigerian partner, “Tidene NGO”, to renovate and construct new wells for villages, crops, and livestock to improve living conditions and combat low life expectancy rates. In addition to building new wells in the area, Les Puits du Désert has built 8 new schools where children now spend time furthering their education instead of fetching water as they had before. The organization also empowers women to become more involved in their local economy by educating them in literacy, management, and generating a stable income.
